Sometimes you just need to better see what’s happening. This was done in two ways: more glow and more info. Thanks to some tester feedback, we have a slightly more polished experience that should help new players learn just a little faster.
UI Glow Upgrade
Even though last year I made the game world glow with HDR quality, I bumped into limits on glow for the UI, so I left that out of the Glow Update. Finally, I discovered a way to glow UI text, which required an engine feature update and a little basic UI work. The combat HUD is now glowing quite a bit (too much? nah) and menu system glows will eventually be applied.
Messaging System
Now that I could glow text, it was time to also make the system that handles on screen messages more robust to handle more cases in which we’d like to tell players something. Once that was rebuilt, I was able to get the end of each level to pop up with text that said the level was cleared, which was suggested to me as a way to make players wonder less if another enemy was about to enter or the support ship was on the way.
Unlocks Panel
Another suggestion was to help players more quickly understand the benefits gained by clearing a level, which translated into a panel of icons that represent any newly unlocked weapons from whatever level you just completed. While the little “NEW” tag next to “Weapons” on the dashboard also provides this type of information, seeing big icons grabs a player’s attention even better.
Bugs & Fixes
Several input and menu system items were tackled, as well, to correct some old mistakes and bring back lost polish. Unfortunately, one fix led to something newly broken, so there’s still a little more to do toward these improvements, but between this update and the next which is already well underway, things look good.
Mo Glow, Mo Info
I think you’ll find this version feels tighter to play, not because of any combat changes but simply because of the added information tossed onto the screen in ways that playtesters suggested might be helpful.
