REVO v0.37.0: Blackout Update

If you haven’t tried the Blackout device in REVO, you’ve really been missing out, but now that it’s locked behind a boss battle, and given the increased difficulty of the entire game, I wish you luck in laying hold of it. You’ll be very glad you did, however.

Blackout Device

The ability to disable enemies has been in the game for a very long time and some of you know how to abuse the heck out of it. Unfortunately, it has remained a hidden feature for many players despite being intended as a critical and core component.

To draw attention to the Blackout device, it is no longer a permanent feature available from the beginning of the game, but instead is now a regular weapon like all others and must be unlocked.

What this does is place it in front of players when they choose their loadout on the weapon select screen and ideally creates a greater sense of appreciation for what it can do after having to fight without it for a bit.

It would be a shame if I failed to mention the electrical effects newly created especially for Blackout response. You’ll see arcs of energy sweep across the ship hulls of your enemies as their power shuts down. Use this wisely as recharge time has been increased, but please enjoy.

More Challenge

The overall goal is an engaging and fun experience. Sometimes I let the game be too easy to avoid needless frustration. Other times I increase the challenge to test the boundaries of the gameplay.

This is one of those latter times where I felt that players didn’t see enough game overs even when they struggled through a section. It feels wrong to finish a level where you never quite gain the upper hand.

Player armor is now much thinner plus costs and delays are greatly increased, but rewards are increased as well. I hope you find that losing seems fair and winning is more satisfying.

Saved Progress

I spent a lot of time once again rebuilding the save system, but I won’t go into the details of that at this time. Just know that your progress and settings files are meant to be 100% backwards compatible. For the complete experience of the latest version of the game, it’s best to start over with a full Reset (see the Settings screen), but this is optional.

Feel free to rename, move, copy, delete, or share REVO’s save files through your computer’s file manager as a way to back them up or manage multiple saves. Here’s where they might be hiding on your system:

  • Windows: C:\Users\username\AppData\LocalLow\Cosmic Misfit Studio\REVO\
  • Linux: ~/.config/unity3d/Cosmic Misfit Studio/REVO/
  • macOS: ~/Library/Logs/Cosmic Misfit Studio/REVO/

If you run into problems or have questions, just reach out here in the comments or, better yet, find me in the Cosmic Misfit Orbital on Discord.
